In July 1995, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service analysts projected world cotton production for the marketing year 1995-1996 at 90.8 milion bales, up 1.8 million from the May 1995 projection. Problems that had affected the 1993-1994 cotton crop continued to impact the 1994-1995 crop. In particular, unfavorable weather, plant disease, and insect infestation plagued cotton growers in India, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China. Shortages from these contries, together with limited stocks, caused world cotton prices to rise sharply. For example, the A-Index cotton price in June 1995 was $0.23 per pound higher than that in June 1994 and $0.40 per pound higher than that in June 1993. Anticipated growing conditions in leading cotton producing nations, such as the United States, the People's Republic of China, the Former Soviet Union, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Pakistan, India, Australia, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and Spain, are reviewed.
