Infestations of sweetpotato whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) cause significant reductions in cotton yields. Growing tests conducted during 1994 indicated a potential loss of more than 20 pounds of lint for each immature whitefly infesting the cotton from late May to early July. Furthermore, cottons with greater leaf hair densities encourage higher levels of infestation. Therefore, farmers faced with infestations that threaten yields should consider planting cottons with lower leaf hair densities. Varieties with hair densities in the range from 0 to 20 hairs per square centimeter are ideal, but varieties with hair densities in the range from 0 to 40 hairs per square centimeter are acceptable for fields with lower sweetpotato whitefly populations. 6 refs.
