A research project in the Mississippi harvested two varieties of cotton at approximately one week intervals to determine the influence of delayed harvesting on yield and fiber quality. The field data demonstrated that the time of harvesting had a significant impact on yeild. Yield increased for approximately 30 days after cotton plant defoliation, but then began to decrease. Rainfall during the harvesting period caused major losses in yield. The research indicates that growers should harvest within 30 days of defoliation to insure larger yields and better quality. 6 refs.
