A USDA project planted, harvested, ginned, and processed 11 major varieties of cotton commonly grown in the san joaquin Valley of California during the previous 50 years. Researchers evaluated the cottons for variety related trends in fiber quality factors and fabric quality factors. The fiber properties considered by the study included fiber length, length uniformity, micronaire, color, and trash content. The yarn properties considered included yarn breaking factor, evenness, and the incidence of thick placess, thin places, and neps. Spinning trials indicated that increases in the quality of fibers from the San Joaquin Valley during the previous 50 years have resulted in significant improvements in yarn and fabric quality. These improvements have had no adverse effects on yields. 2 refs.
