Cotton Incorporated has begun to license the Engineered Fiber Selection (EFS) Cotton Fiber Management System (CFMS), a collection of computer software programs that allow mills to handle cotton inventories based on high volume instrument (HVI) data and to select the most suitable cotton for a particular quality of yarn. EMS comprises MillNet, a program that allows mills to manage contracts, customize minimixes, communicate with merchants/producers, and decide mixes; QRNet, to facilitate electronic data interchange among mills, gins/producers, and merchants; CALNet, designed to clarify the calibration history of HVI lines; and GINNet, which allows ginners and producers to analyze HVI data to determine fiber qualities and the monetary value of cotton. The benefits of EFS include the cost effective purchase of required qualities of cotton to meet target specifications of end products, optimum utilization of the technological fiber properties of cotton, improved uniformity of yarn and fabric, labor saving in warehousing, and better communication between producers, ginners, and spinners to identify factors affecting cotton quality. 8 refs.
