Monsanto has genetically engineered cotton varieties that are resistant to pink bollworm, tobacco budworm, and cotton bollworm and tolerant to Roundup herbicide. These varieties contain the Bollgard gene, which is derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki that produces a protein active against lepidopteran insects, and the Roundup Ready gene, which is derived from the bacterium Agrobacterium species strain CP4 that produces an enzyme highly tolerant to Roundup herbicide. Safety testing indicates that both of these proteins are nontoxic to animals. Cotton processing tends to inactivate these proteins, which ensures that no significant human exposure will occur. Western plot analysis indicates that only very low levels of the proteins are present in some cotton linters.
