In 1959, the first manmade fiber manufacturing facility in South Korea produced polyvinyl alcohol staple. Since then, the industry has grown significantly and added capacity for a range of fiber types, including nylon filament, viscose filament (discontinued in 1993), acrylic staple, polypropylene filament and staple, polyester filament and staple, acetate filament, and spandex filament. In 1993, production capacity was 4,978.3 tons per day. The polyester filament sector, which has experienced the greatest growth, accounts for 2,194.1 tons per day. In production volume and accounted for 8 percent of the total world production. Except for polyester staple, domestic consumption accounted for most of the production.
