Although the manmade fiber industry has grown significantly through its history, the demand for the natural fibers, cotton and wool, remain very high. However, the low costs and improved performance properties of manmade fibers represent a major competitive advantage over natural fibers. Nylon fiber is notable for its elastic recovery, abrasion resistance, and durability, which are important properties in apparel, carpets, and industrial textiles. Apparel is currently the major end use for nylon, and nylon 6 has a significantly larger market share than nylon 66 in this category. In the production of carpet filament and staple fibers, nylone 66 is the more important fiber type. Forecasts indicate that industrial textiles and plastics represent the major growth areas for nylon 66 through 2000.
