Rayon fiber, which is a manmade fiber composed of regenerated cellulose consists of chains of sugar units and are identical to cotton in their molecular structure. The three methods of manufacturing rayon fibers are the viscose, cuprammonium, and Tencel processes. The viscose process is by far the most widely used. The Tencel process, which has been recently developed, has the advantage over the viscose process of environmental safety and has strong growth potential in the next century. A general review of rayon fibers covers viscose rayon (structure, process, physical properties, absorbency, use in nonwoven fabric manufacture, and current status) and Tencel rayon (process and fiber properties).
