Sericultural production strategies in the 21st century

This article examines the history and present situation of world sericulture, reporting that China is the World's largest raw silk producer with 63％ of total world production in 1992. China's experiences in developing sericulture are discussed and the factors described for a successful industry are: construction of a base for producing high yield and quality silk; setting up an effective system for spreading scientific and technological knowledge; and making a decision to promote sericulture development. Promotion of silk production and consumption through international cooperation is discussed which will require maintaining stable sources of good quality silk, developing new varieties of silk goods to satisfy different consumer tastes, enhancing cooperation to promote the development of production and scientific techniques and coordinating sericulture management.
