Aramid fibers comprise two categories--meta-aramid fibers, which include polyamide-imide fibers, and para-aramid fibers. DuPont developed the first aramid fiber, Nomex, in 1962. Another early fiber development was Conex by Teijin, which is based on the same core organic structure as Nomex. The only commercial polyamide-imide fiber is Kermel, introduced in 1969 by Rhone-Poulenc. Meta-aramid fibers retain useful properties at high temperatures, resist combustion, resist most organic and inorganic liquids, and present good hydrolytic stability. The first significant commercial para-aramid fiber was Kevlar, which was introduced by Du Pont in 1973. Teijin originally introduced its Technora fiber as HM-50. In 1991, Hoechst Celanese announced its intentions to produce Supara, which is based on copolyaramid chemistry. Para-aramid fibers are generally hydrolytically stable and can be dyed with water soluble dyes. numerous refs.
