Courtaulds researchers have developed Tencel, a manmade cellulosic fiber that can be used in apparel, home furnishings, industrial fabrics, nonwoven fabrics, and papermaking products. Tencel is a lyocell product comprised of cellulose based fibers, which are produced using the solvent dissolution process involving N-methyl morpholine oxide. A 2 hour solvent spinning process, which involves no hazardous raw materials, virtual total solvent recovery, and no hazardous effluents, produces Tencel. Tencel is 100 percent natural cellulose, moisture absorbent, and easily colored with traditional cellulosic dyestuffs. Tencel also has a circular cross sectional shape with a smooth fiber surface, outstanding tensile properties, and a high initial wet modulus. Courtaulds plans to expand production capacity of Tencel to 150,000 tons per year, concentratig production and consumption in the Asia/Pacific region.
