According to the chairman of Lenzing, the leading producer of viscose rayon and modal fibers, lyocell has the potential to surpass both cotton and viscose rayon in most applications. H. Stepniczka bases his prediction on key advantages offered by lyocell fibers, including higher performance characteristics, environmental friendliness, and a faster and more cost effective production system. An overview of Lenzing's recent market activity reveals that the company has adopted a strategy requiring all subsidiary activities to contribute to cellulosic fiber operations. That approach has led the company to abandon such nonassociated interests as plastic machinery manufacturing and high performance polymers. Lenzing's primary European plant produces 130,000 tons of lyocell each year. In 1994, fiber operations accounted for 179 million British pounds sterling.
