Prompted by consumer demand for environmentally safe products, Germany is banning the manufacture and import of any textile product containing azo dyes. Current environmental protection regulations for the textile industry cover all sectors, including cotton cultivation, yarn spinning, fabric weaving, dyeing, finishing, and refining the fabric, apparel manufacturing, product packaging, laundering, and waste disposal. The European Union is developing the Eco-label to identify products that reduce resource consumption, emissions, and solid waste. Producers and importers to European Union countries seeking Eco-label certification should apply to a certified body with detailed information about the product and production methods, conduct product testing through a certified board, document conformity of processes, offer quality assurances, and cooperate with spot checks conducted by the certification body.
