A system is described which has been developed for the discriminatory reproducible analysis of trash particles. The system analyses trash particle content while discriminating between different classes of trash. This can be used to determine the composition of trash in bale samples, thus enabling assessment of the cleaning effort required, and the expected content of imperfections.
