Researchers compared the differences in wool grown on the folds and wrinkles at the neck, midside, and thigh of sheep with wool grown on adjacent nonwrinkled skin. Ten selected merino wethers from a medium wool merino flock exhibited extreme fold and wrinkle development of the skin. Results indicated that wool grown on the folds and wrinkles had a greater average fiber diameter with a greater standard deviation and coefficient of variation than wool grown on nonwrinkled skin. Staples collected from folds proved to be shorter than those collected off the folds. Skin samples collected on and adjacent to the wrinkes of six wethers provided information on follicle density. Follicles located on wrinkles demonstrated decreased density, but the ratio of secondary to primary follicles remained similar for both wrinkled and nonwrinkled skin. Wrinkled or folded skin produced less desirable wool, which could adversely influence fleece quality. numerous refs.
