Research on the structural transformations that occur during the thermal stabilization of polyacrylonitrile fiber (PAN) prepared samples with the salt method. X-ray diffraction and infrared polarization spectroscopy evaluated changes in the orientation of PAN fiber during oxidation. X-ray diffraction was optimal for the evaluation of the ordered regions of the molecules, whereas infrared polarization spectroscopy was optimal for the evaluation of molecular chain segments. The evaluations confirmed the hypothesis that the precursor fiber confers its orientation on the oxidized fiber. Scale dependencies of the strngth of the oxidized fiber prepared under different deformation modes (stretching, constant length, and shrinkage) differed significantly. 6 refs.
