Research on the mechanisms involved in the realization of strength in microplastics reinforced with carbon fibers prepared test samples by fiber impregnation with epoxy-phenol binder under tension. The research measured the mechanical properties of both the carbon fibers and the microplastics reinforced with carbon fibers on various Instron testers. Data from these tests yielded parameters of the scale dependence of the strength, average modulus of elasticity, and fiber diameter. Researchers used the model of fracture of carbon reinforced plastics by fiber breakage during stretching to relate the strength of the carbon fiber in the microplastic with that of the carbon fiber at its critical length. Strength and average modulus of elasticity were critical in the determination of the strength of the microplastic. 11 refs.
