An introduction to Tencel, a fiber produced by an environmentally friendly solvent spinning process that utilizes the direct dissolution of cellulose in an organic solvent, describes the formation, properties, and applications of the fiber. Tencel features high strength and good tensile characteristics that facilitate its use in blends with other fibers. As a fabric, Tencel demonstrates high tear and tensile strength and low shrinkage in hot wate. In nonwoven fabrics, Tencel exhibits lower water absorption than similar viscose based farics. Tencel is suitable, however, for both hydroentangled and thermally bonded nonwovens.
