An experiment studied the effect of fiber length on the elastic modulus of a random sheet of paper. According to the finite fiber length model, the elastic property of the sheet of paper in a lower density clearly depends on the length of the constituent fibers. A plot of the experimental values of the elastic modulus of the sheets of paper, however, did not support the trends predicted by the model. Fiber length was not a critical factor in elastic modulus. The shape of the fibers in the sheet of paper was neither vertically nor horizontally straight because of tight packing. The results indicated limitations in application of the finite fiber length model to a real sheet of paper. 20 refs.
