A New Objective Method for Assessing Fibre Arrangement in Fibrous Webs.

No objective measurement techniques exist for the systematic examination of the structural features of fiber assemblies. Researchers have developed an objective measurement technique that uses image analysis methods to identify and characterize the fiber states in the fibrous web or sliver sample. The process of image analysis comprises three stages: image digitization, image enhancement, and the extraction of fiber segment states. Web structural features were analyzed according to 12 basic primitives representing the complex physical states of fiber images. The image analysis technique is suitable for the analysis of fibrous webs and for the measure of fiber arrangement parameters on the surface of a sliver. 12 refs.
