A research project standardized and modernized the classification principles used for assessing the quality of scutched flax fibers. The conventional method of quality evaluation relied on a general mean number derived from a calculation that accounted for the scutched fiber mass, hackled fiber mass, and the mass of the combings. A new flax sorting concept relied on the separation of qualitative and quantitative quality factors to estimate the expected quantity of hackled fibers and the anticipated minimum yield. The standardized method also accounted for such organoleptic fiber qualities as divisibility, oiliness, heaviness, strength, color, homogeneity, appearance, fragrance, and staining. 3 refs.
