The chairman of Lenzing AG, currently the world's biggest producer of viscose rayon and modal fabrics, has suggested that lyocell fibres could eventually replace cotton in contempory mass markets for the natural fibre, and may even replace traditional viscose rayon inmost applications in the longer term. The advantages of lyocell fibres are that the manufacturing method is environmentally-friendly, the fibres are said to offer considerably higher performance method is potentially more cost-effective than that used for viscose rayon. Lenzing has been producing Lenzing Lyocell on a pilot scale line, and the decision to construct a commercial scale lyocell plant is discussed. Steps taken by the group to consolidate its position as the largest producer of man-made cellulosic fibres are also considered.
