An investigation into the manufacture and chemical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) examined the PVA loads of textile wastewater in Germany and current research into the microbiological degradation of PVA. Industrial data collected between 1990 and 1992 suggest that PVA is microbiologically degradable in mechanical-biological wastewater treatment plants featuring such system related conditions as a adaptation, constant inflow, sludge loads of less than 0.15 kilogram BSB5 per 1 kilogram TSxd, and temperatures above 15 degrees centigrade. Below 10 degrees centigrade, the PVA degradation capacity of activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants declines dramatically, primarily due to a lower concentration of PVA degrading microorganisms. 37 refs.
