The United States Department of Agriculture is supporting a project by Perdue Farms of Maryland to utilise fibres made from chicken feathers, a biodegradable alternative to existing man-made fibres. A new separation process has been developed for the chicken feather fibres which are more absorbent than any existing man-made fibres. The fibres are initially expected to find applications in disposable diapers, hospital wipes and feminine hygiene products.
