Production capacity for elastane, or spandex, yarns is increasing significantly (7 percent annually), particularly in the United States and Asia. With nine facilities throughout the world, Du Pont is currently the major producer. In 1996, estimates of total world capacity were greater than 85,000 tons annually. Consumption in 195 was 63,000 tons. Most facilities use dry extrusion to process spandex yarns, with a small percentage of production in wet or melt extrusion. However, some growth is occurring in the use of melt extrusion because of its potential to produce spandex yarns with improved wet heat resistance. Another important development has been the introduction of Teijin's Rexe, which is a novel polymer comprising aliphatic polyester and conventional polyester and has elastic properties comparable to spandex. 5 refs.
