Mechanical Properties of Fused Composites.

Scientists investigated the fundamental mechanical properties of a fused composite in terms of the properties of its constituent parts. They fused three silk fabrics and three cotton fabrics with interlinings made from woven and nonwoven base fabrics on which a thermoplastic polymer had been deposited. A two element rheological model evaluated bending and shear hysteresis curves. The bending, shear, and tensile properties of the shell fabrics, interlinings, and composites were evaluated. Data indicate that fusing restricts fiber movement within a fabric, resulting in higher bending and shear resistance of the fused composite. 12 refs.
