Linen offers a wide variety of weights, textures, and forms in colors ranging from subtle to vivid. Flax fibers are lint-free, dirt resistant, lustrous, and two to three times stronger than cotton. Because old, soft linens wrinkle less than new, crisp ones, manufacturers are focusing on finishing processes to soften the fabric. Machine sewing linen requires little special equipment. Since linen ravels easily and linen apparel is often unlined, it is important to select the right hem and seam finish. Diagrams illustrate such sewing techniques for linen as French seams for light weight fabric, Hong Kong finish for unlined jackets, avoiding linen pleat spreading, gathering, piping, slot seams, and godets.
