A technique developed by the Institute fur Angewandte Forshung uses steam explosion to convert flax into short staple linen fibers with novel properties. The technique comprises high speed chemical degumming with simultaneous mechanical separation of the fiber bundles. Optimized variables include time, temperature, extrusion speed, and additives to decrease the activation energy. The mechanism of the steam explosion involves the penetration of the steam into the fiber; degradation of pectins, hemicelluloses, and other plant chemicals; disintegration of the plant structure into short staple fibers by explosion; and degradation ofthe cellulose. The morphology and chemical compositon of the flax therefore critically affect process performance. Scouring, carding, and spinning follow. 4 refs.
