Researchers at the Department of Textile Technology at the University of Ljubljana investigated the accuracy and reliability of the Benedict method for detecting the presence of reducing sugars on cotton fibers. Standard Benedict methods allow qualitative determination of reducing sugars in cotton honeydew through differential dyeability, a consequence of copper compound reduction. Researchers compared data from Benedict tests with gas chromatography and modified the Benedict method to enable a quantitative estimation of reducing sugars on cotton fibers. 4 refs.
