Research at the National Institute for Standards in Giza, Egypt, studied the photodegradation of cellulosic cotton by direct exposure to ambient conditions at an urban industrial site for one year. The fabric samples varied in nominal weight, warp and weft density, and warp and weft linear density. Meteorological stations near the site documented the environmental data, particularly the incident solar energy. A range of methods evaluated the level and character of the photodegradation. Spectrophotometry tracked changes in brightness and color. Scanning electron microscopy documented modifications in surface morphology. Research also examined changes in the carboxyl end groups, copper number, and pH values. Losses in tensile strength and percentage elongation represented deterioration in mechanical properties. 9 refs.
