Verticillium wilt is the most important disease affecting the cotton crop in South Africa. Researchers at the Tobacco && Cotton Research Institute in Rustenburg, South Africa, isolated several defoliating strains that differed slightly in their virulence. Strains collected from the Lower Orange River growing region were more virulent than any other isolates. Lower Orange River strains also possessed a different isozyme profile in the B-esterase systems. Preliminary evidence suggests that selective pressures due to monoculture of the cotton cultivar is at least partially responsible for the emergence of these more virulent strains. Researchers are attempting to breed South African cultivars for resistance to Verticillium wilt. 10 refs.
