This is a review of the developments in microfibre technology since the origin of microfibres as bicomponent conjugate fibres forty-five years ago. Five major applications are identified: artificial suedes, silk-like fabrics, super high density fabrics, second generation artificial leathers, and high performance wiping cloths. The properties of popular microfibre products are given.
