Figures indicating the world production and consumption of jute during the 1980s, its import and export raw and in products, the tariffs on jute goods and the outlook for the jute market are presented. The world market for jute is discussed. Taken together, India, Bangladesh, China and Thailand produce over 90％ of the world's jute. A general decline has taken place in demand for jute over the last few years; recently, however, jute's environmental credentials have been extolled.
