Researchers investigated the use of the Onsager and Debye functions to estimate the dielectric constants for various environmentally benign esters that are potential substitutes for some chlorinated systems. The experiment used a number of solvents to determine the linear relationship between the emission maxima of Nile Red and the two polarity functions. Based upon these data, investigators determined the dielectric constants for another set of solvents. Results indicated a linear relationship by plotting the Onsager function and the Debye function as a function of the emission maxima of Nile Red. use of this relationship estimated the dielectric constants for some dibasic esters, triethyl citrate, and ethyl lactate. The approach provided a convenient experimental method to estimate static dielectric constants of some less common organic solvents. 11 refs.
