Researchers investigated the temperature dependence of the slow adsorption and desorption kinetics of specific chlorobenzenes, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in both laboratory and field contaminated sediments. Measurement of the desorption kinetics used Tenax TA beads in a solid phase extraction method for the desorbed solute, hexane. A first order kinetic model with three sediment compartments described the desorption of the test compounds from the sediments. Based upon adsorption studies at two temperatures, the enthalpies of sorption to the slow sediment compartment appeared slightly negative. Because slow desorption was much faster at elevated temperatures, the measurement of high temperature desorption kinetics provided information on long term desorption kinetics and, possibly, on the feasibility of bioremediation of aged contaminants. 38 refs.
