Montefibre, the major manufacturer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer and polyester fiber and yarn in Italy, collaborated with Replastic Consortium to develop processes to convert polyester fiber from recycled PET bottles into apparel fabrics. The project required that Montefibre and Replastic Consortium improve the quality of PET flakes, develop a new technology for the manufacture of high quality and fine count staple fiber from the bottoles, and develop yarns and fabrics for a wide range of apparel end uses. The result of the project was the Terital Eco fiber, which has comparable properties to conventional PET fibers, is processable on cotton and woolen spinning systems, and can be knit or woven into fabrics.
