BIODEGRADATION IN TEHERMOPLASTICS OF LIGNIN

Monomers polymerizable by the free-radical mechanism, such as styrene (1-polyphenylene), can be converted to graft copolymers of lignin. The copolymerization products were thermoplastic and biodegradable. Weight loss, scanning electron microscopy, and oxidative enzyme production verified bioconversion and degradation. Both the polystyrene and lignin components of the copolymer were readily degraded. Polystyrene pellets were not degraded in these tests. 3 refs.
