Nitroxide spin labels and electron spin resonance (ESR) were used to study the deposition kinetics of silane coupling agents on silica and fiberglass. The two stages in deposition were hydrolysis and condensation. The rate constants for the two stages were calculated. The deposition rate was controlled by the stage with the slowest rate constant. The character and structure of the coupling agent layer were established with ESR. The lineshape of the ESR signal was sensitive to the microenvironment of the spln label, therefore, molecular dynamics and microviscosity could be studied. Spin-labeled fillers were used to probe the coupling agent interface. Not all coupling agents exhibited the same deposition rates, a phenomenon due to differences in the organofunctional groups. 16 refs.
