Courtaulds has begun commercial production of Tencel, a solvent-spun cellulosic staple. Tencel is stronger than rayon, both wet and dry, and is easily processed and dyed. The fiber is being spun at a plant in Mobile, Alabama, with a production capacity of 20,000 tons per year. Courtaulds has invested about 100 million Pounds Sterling during development of the fiber. More than half of that investment was for new production equipment. Tencel fiber is spun from renewable celluosic materials. The production process creates virtually no effluent. The solvent used during production is recovered and reused.
