Enzymes that can be used to soften and defibrillate low-grade jute and jute cuttings were examined. Both commercial enzymes (Novo's Flaxzyme and Pe ctinex and Bicon's Bioxylanase) and enzymes extracted from the fungl Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus terreus were tested. The extracts from both Aspergillus species showed similar activity, but the extract from A. niger had maximum pectinylase activity. The extracts, Flaxzyme, and Bioxylanase softened jute samples within 24 hours. Flaxzyme, the extract from A. terreus, and the mixture of commercial enzymes were the most effective at improving fiber separation, fineness, and stiffness. 12 refs.
