Low-grade jute and jute cuttings are not spinnable unless they are treated. Several chemicals were tested for their ability to improve microbiological treatments. Ammonium salts (diammonium phosphate and ammonium oxalate) and urea performed best and increased microbial activity under conventional mill conditions. No significant loss of weight or bundle strength occurred. The use of diammonium phosphate resulted in the most rapid multipication of microorganisms within a 72-hour period. The treated fibers were used as weft in sacking, which had significantly increased quality compared with the control. 5 refs.
