Acrylic fiber is among the most important of the manmade fibers, despite relatively few industrial uses and production that is almost entirely confined to staple fiber. Du Pont introduced the first acrylic yarn, tradenamed Orlon, in 1948. Problems with dyeing limited its marketability in the beginning. The addition of dyeable monomers to acrylonitrile solved the problem by 1953. Acrylic fiber is frequently used as a substitute for wool because of its lower costs and washability. Acrylic yarns blended with wool or other fibers are less frequently produced than 100 percent acrylic yarns. The major market for acrylic fiber is knitwear.
