The development of superabsorbent polymers in both powder and fiber form is reviewed. Powders are cheaper to produce than fibers, but more difficult to handle and incorporate in a product. Fibers are easier to use and have wider applications. Superabsorbent fibers can be produced by chemical modifications to a non-superabsorbent fiber or by extrusion from a specially prepared superabsorbent polymer. An advanced superabsorbent polyacrylate fiber, called FSA, has been developed by a collaboration between Courtaulds and Allied Colloids. FSA is produced by dry spinning and subsequent crosslinking. The properties and processing of and applications for FSA fibers are described. The construction of an FSA applications for FSa fibers are described. The construction of an FSA production facility in the United Kingdom is planned
