Research into the preparation of high-strength fibers from liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers at Khimvolokno in Russia is reviewed. Poly-p-phenylene terephthalamide (PPTA) is used in the preparation of high-strength, high-modulus aramid fibers. Comonomeric units can be added to the solution of LC PPTA to change such properties as strength, modulus, and viscosity. LC aromatic copolyesters are used in the preparation of high-strength polyester fibers. Equilibrium high-temperature polycondensation is currently the most technically feasible method of preparation. Heterocyclic LC polyarylenes are used in the preparation of super-high-modulus, high-strength poly-p-phenylene benzobisthiazole (PBT) fibers. The status of each of these fibers relative to industrial production is discussed. 7 refs.
