The effects of finishing on the chemical properties and structure of conventional viscose fibers and high-modulus viscose fibers were examined. The finishing processes included desulfurizing, bleaching, and brightening. The degree of polymerization, content of carbonyl and carboxyl groups, degree of swelling in water, solubility in sodium hydroxide, mean crystallite length, crystallite defectiveness, sulfur content, and whiteness were measured. These properties were measured at different stages in finishing, such as before and after desulfurizing and before and after brighening. The finished fiber was also measured for these properties. 3 refs.
