The use of Courtaulds' Tencel cellulosic fibers in apparel fabrics has been very successful. Tencel is often used in blends with cotton, linen, wool, silk, and rayon. Compared with rayon, another cellulosic, Tencel has excellent washability, superior strength, and takes color better. Tencel will make its first strong appearance at the retail level during the spring and summer of 1994. Courtaulds spent $20 million over 10 years to develop the fiber. Full-scale production began in July 1992 at a plant in Mobile, alabama. Apparel fabric manufacturers discuss the use of Tencel in their products.
