The International Textile Manufacturers Federation has conducted an international survey on cotton contamination, which remains a major problem, particularly with automation. In the survey, spinnig mills indicated the extent of contamination for each of 16 sources. The most frequent source of contamination was organic matter (leaves, feathers, paper, and leather), followed by fabric (cotton, jute/hessian, woven plastic, and plastic film), strings (jute/hessian, cotton, woven plastic, and plastic film), inorganic matter (san/dust, metal/wire, and rust), and oily substances/chemicals (grease/oil, stamp color, rubber, and tar). Results from 1989 were compared with those from 1991. India, Turkey, Sudan, Brazil, Pakistan, and Egypt had the most contaminated cotton. Israell Acala was the least contaminated. The cotton was evaluated for stickiness and seed-coat fragments as well.
