Courtaulds executives describe Tencel as a new, natural luxury fiber for apparel and home fashion. Tencel is made of wood pulp from trees grown on managed forests, thus making it an environmentally freindly fiber. Tencel has the drape and color of rayon, but it is stronger than rayon. It costs about 50 cents more per pound than rayon, which makes it more suitable for upscale markets. Tencel has achieved a new classification in Europe, lyocell, and it is awaiting a similar designation in the United States. Courtaulds new $100 million state-of-the-art production facility went online in Alabama recently. The plant will produce 20,000 metric tons annually. Currently, Tencel is abailable in 1.5 denier. Courtaulds is experimenting with smaller deniers. A list of mills and converters of Tencel fabrics is presented.
