Technological developments in the production of viscose that are environmentally safe will probably reverse the deownward trend for this fiber. Nuova Rayon Italia of Rieti, Italy, has ploneered the use of some of these developments in producing Rayon FCT 3000 filament yarn at its state-of-the-art facility. The production cycle includes dissolving and aging the cellulose, which is reacted with carbon disulfide to yield xanthate. Dilution with sodium hydroxide yields viscose. Pigments and other chemicals can be added. The viscose is filtered, degassed, and stabilized for spinning. Neutralization and coagulation ensure that the viscose solidifies. Carbon disulfide released during the cycle is recovered.
